Allergy Symptoms in Pets

An allergy is an abnormal reaction by the body's immune system that's triggered by a substance. Depending on the trigger, symptoms will vary but can include:

•             Diarrhea

•             Gas

•             Vomiting

•             Hives

•             Facial swelling

•             Scratching or biting the skin

•             Red and inflamed skin

•             Loss of hair

•             Coughing

•             Wheezing

•             Runny nose and eyes

•             Bumps and lumps

•             Dry, flaky skin

Causes of Allergies in Pets

The causes of allergies are just as varied as the symptoms. Sometimes, it's easy to pinpoint the cause through a physical exam and discussion with the pet owner. Sometimes, however, the causes are more complex, requiring additional testing. Pet allergy testing can consist of a blood test and/or a skin test to help reveal the causes, which can include:

•             Proteins in food

•             Food additives

•             Fleas, ticks, mites

•             Pollen

•             Mold

•             Grasses and weeds

•             Fabric

•             Household cleaners

•             Perfumes

•             Medication

•             Shampoo

•             Rubber and plastic

Treatment for Pet Allergies

Once the vet has determined the cause, we can prescribe the appropriate pet allergy treatment. These can include flea and tick medication, topical ointments and sprays, allergy tablets or chews, dietary supplements, and medicated shampoo. In severe cases, a pet may be given a steroid medicine to help reduce inflammation. You can also help reduce your pets' allergies by regularly bathing and grooming, and wiping their paws and face after they've been outside. Regular vacuuming and washing your pets' bedding a few times a week can also help.
